The best AI tools for Indian startups

A curated list of AI tools picked for India — INR-friendly billing, payment methods that work here, languages we actually speak, and tools founders we know already use.

Last reviewed · Editorial · No paid placement

This list is for founders and small teams running startups out of India. Every tool here is available in India without a workaround, most accept INR (or are free), and the recommendations factor in things global lists ignore: UPI support, Hindi-first behaviour, Tier-2 / Tier-3 user reality, and the price gap between what a Bangalore SaaS team and a San Francisco team can spend.

Sponsorship does not influence this list. Tools we have a paid relationship with are labelled as sponsored everywhere they appear on Rovox — and they are not on this page unless they would have made the cut anyway.

Indian-built

Worth giving Indian foundation-model startups your default attention before reaching for global tools.

Editor’s pick for Indic AI

India's most serious bet on Indic-language AI. If your product touches Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, or Bengali users, Sarvam is the tool that actually understands grammar nuance — not a translation layer bolted onto an English model. The consumer chat is newer and less feature-rich than ChatGPT; the developer API is where the real value sits. Trade-off: smaller knowledge base than global models for non-Indic queries, and the API needs a commercial conversation rather than instant signup. Best fit: founders building India-first products, especially for users outside Tier-1 cities.

Ola's foundation model for India. Free to use, INR-friendly (you don't need a US card), and one of the few options that handles Hindi as a first-class language rather than as an afterthought. Feature parity with ChatGPT isn't there yet — Krutrim is best for general Hindi/English questions and translation rather than long code generation or research-heavy work. Best fit: founders who want to support the Indian AI ecosystem in their own daily workflow, and consumer-facing teams testing Hindi UX.

Productivity essentials

The four tools nearly every Indian startup ends up using in the first six months.

The default. ChatGPT Plus is billed in INR, the lower-cost Go plan launched in India before most other markets, and the product is good enough at writing, brainstorming, summarising, and basic coding that it earns its place even on an India-centric list. Trade-off: voice and advanced video features still arrive later in India than the US. Best fit: every kind of founder, especially those running solo or with a tiny team where ChatGPT acts as a second pair of hands.

If your team already lives in Notion (most Indian startups do), Notion AI is the lowest-friction way to add AI to your docs, meeting notes, and wiki. The Q&A across your workspace is the standout feature. Trade-off: the full AI is now bundled into the Business plan at $20/user/month — billed in USD — and only makes sense if Notion is your main workspace. Best fit: teams already on Notion who want to stop copy-pasting between apps.

ProductivityPaidINR pricing· Free Notion plan; full AI in Business at $20/mo per user

Joins your meetings, transcribes, summarises, and pulls out action items. The free tier covers 300 minutes per month, which is enough for most early-stage teams. Works well with Indian English; less reliable for heavy code-switching between English and Indian languages. Trade-off: USD pricing, and the meeting-bot pattern can feel intrusive on early client calls — set expectations first. Best fit: consultancies, agencies, and remote teams who do not want to take notes by hand.

The non-technical founder's way to automate. The free tier (100 tasks/month) covers basic workflows like 'new form submission → Slack notification → row in Google Sheets'. Trade-off: USD billing once you scale past the free tier, and pricing gets expensive faster than founders expect — many graduate to Pipedream or n8n. Best fit: solo founders and small ops teams getting started with automation before they hire engineers.

Marketing & design

The tools that produce shippable marketing output without a dedicated designer or copywriter.

Canva has India offices, INR pricing, UPI payments, and is the default design tool for almost every marketing person you will hire. The AI features — Magic Studio, text-to-image, background remover, video generation — are mature and produce work that is good enough for social media, decks, and landing pages without a designer. Trade-off: brand consistency is your job, not Canva's — it is easy to ship visually inconsistent assets when many people are designing. Best fit: founders without an in-house designer, marketing teams shipping daily.

Image & DesignFree planINR pricingUPI· Free; Pro at ₹499/mo (₹3,999/yr)

Built specifically for marketing teams. Brand voice training, SEO-aware content briefs, and template libraries make it more useful than ChatGPT for content marketers shipping volume. Trade-off: USD pricing is steep ($49/month starting), so it pays off only when you are producing real content volume — below 10 long-form pieces a month, ChatGPT plus a strong style guide is cheaper. Best fit: B2B marketing teams and content agencies serving multiple clients.

Marketing & SEOPaidINR pricing· Creator at $39/mo; Pro at $59/mo; 7-day free trial

AI-generated video presenters in multiple languages, including Hindi. Useful when you need product demos, training videos, or marketing creative without a video team. Trade-off: USD billing ($29/month minimum), and the result still feels like AI video to attentive viewers — works better for utility content than brand storytelling. Best fit: B2B SaaS marketing teams, education platforms, internal training where production speed matters more than cinematic quality.

Engineering

Where to start if you have engineering work to do.

Editor’s pick for engineering teams

The current state-of-the-art AI code editor. Generous free tier covers most solo developers; Pro starts at $20/month. What sets Cursor apart for Indian engineering teams is that it understands your whole codebase, not just the file you are editing — which matters when your team is small and onboarding speed is everything. Trade-off: USD billing, and heavy use of the agent features can hit credit limits fast. Best fit: any engineering team of 1–20 building product code daily.

Methodology

These are tools the Rovox editorial team uses or has interviewed users about. Each entry is reviewed at least quarterly. We weigh: practical India availability (no geoblock, no awkward signup), pricing reality in INR or USD-but-justifiable, free-tier usefulness, language support where it matters, and whether the tool earns its place over a free alternative.

We do not accept payment to include or exclude tools on this page. Sponsorship buys placement in clearly labelled sponsored slots elsewhere on Rovox — see our disclosure for the full policy.
